"Nils Holgerssons underbara resa", "The wonderful adventures of Nils" is one of the most famous children's tale in Sweden and was written by Selma Lagerlöf, who was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1909. Additionally, she was the first female to be granted a membership in The Swedish Academy, in 1914. This book describes the journey across Sweden of Nils, on the back of a farm goose, and has the purpose to teach children the geography of Sweden in an entertaining way. On this fine little canvas you can see Nils riding the white goose as the Swedish landscapes are unfolding.
Both the weaving and embroidering are executed by hand with the "Tvistöm" technique, which reminds of cross-stitch but is used to cover surfaces. Estimated period is the 1940's.
